1. Last Will & Testament - Dividing up Sheep

An old farmer just died. Just before that, he wrote a testament stating how his property should be shared:

-My eldest son will receive one half of my sheep.

-My cadet son will receive one third of my sheep.

-My youngest son will receive one ninth of my sheep.
There are 17 sheep to share among the 3 sons. How should they do it? Cutting one sheep into pieces is not an option.

2. The Missing Dollar (Enron Financial Methods)

Three men checked into a hotel room for which they paid a total of $30, $10 each. The next day, the manager realized that the men had been over-charged. She gave the bellhop $5 to return to the three men. On the way to their room the bellhop decided to keep $2 for himself, and give each of the three men one dollar. The three men had now paid $9 each, or a total of $27. This plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes a total of $29. What happened to the other dollar?

You may flip as many switches on and off as many times as you want to but can only can go one time into the room with the bulbs. How do you determine which switch controls each bulb?

5. Snail's Pace

A snail wants to climb a wall that's 10 feet high. During the day it can climb 3 feet, but at night it slides down 2 feet, which means that the next day it managed to advance only by one foot. How many days will it take for the snail to reach the top of the wall?

6. Remove Six Letters

Remove six letters from the following string of letters to leave a common English word:

        S B I A X L N E T A T N E R A S

ANSWERS:

1. Last Will & Testament - Dividing up Sheep
Every sheep farmer lives near another sheep farmer, so you go and borrow 1 sheep. Now you have 18 sheep total. 1/2 of 18 = 9; 1/3 of 18 = 6; 1/9 of 18 = 2. 9+6+2=17 so you can return the borrowed sheep.

2. The Missing Dollar (Enron Financial Methods)
There is no missing dollar. The room renters have paid out a total of $27 and there is $27 in receipts, $25 are with the hotel manager and $2 are with the bellhop. Beware of people that try to lead you astray by convincing you that debits are credits. Your retirement pot may be at risk.

3. Light Bulbs and Switches
You turn on one switch and wait 2 full minutes, then turn on another one. Now only one switch is in the off position. Immediately walk into the room that has the light bulbs. The bulb that is off is controlled by the one switch that is off. Of the two that are on, one is hot to the touch and the other is cool, so you can determine which one was turned on 2 minutes later than the other one.

5. Snail's Pace
The answer is 9 days. After 8 days the snail has traveled 8'. On the 9th day it goes up 2' and is out.
